Annual British Army Lists, 1740-1784

Part 19 of the BOA series, British Records on the Atlantic World, 1700-1900.

This collection of Army lists is reproduced from the volumes held at the Royal Artillery Insititution in London. These documents are primarily concerned with regimental officers, rather than Command or Staff appointments. Officers featured include colonels, lieutenant-colonels, majors, captains, lieutenants, infantry ensigns, and cavalry cornets.

Seeking promotion could be a risky business in an army where those above the rank of regimental colonels were only required during wartime. In order to secure their place in the Army against the next period of peace, generals would retain their regimental colonel titles; therefore, lieutenants had to act as captain-lieutenants to fill the void as colonels were pre-occupied by being generals. Regiments themselves were not necessarily secure however, as the last to be formed were the first to be disbanded. The original purpose of these Lists was to ensure that surplus regiments were disbanded in the correct order during peacetime.

Information within these papers extends beyond tables of officers names, regiment numbers, and ranks. For those with an interest in British soldiers' service abroad, with regard to America, Antigua, or Ireland for example, the lists of those serving in named regiments within these countries may be of particular interest. Other classes of soldier listed include chaplains, adjutants, quartermasters, and surgeons. The Lists are then completed by tables of the regimental colonels at the time when each regiment was raised. Colonels were known to 'swap' between regiments to avoid concerns such as fighting in a particular theatre of operations or being among the first colonels to have their regiment disbanded after the war of the time.

Members of the Artillery and Engineers are not included in these lists as those were predominantly civilian services at the time they were written. Each list is followd by any miscellaneous concern that the editor considered to be appropriate for that year. The lists have little to say about war, which is sometimes regarded by traditionalists as an unfortunate irrelevance to the real purpose of the army, to enable officers to live like gentlemen, a subject for which the annual lists are an indispensable source.
