Miscellaneous other Liverpool directories

Over the years, a number of other publishers tried to emulate Gore's success but in vain, as this small group of directories, representing all those for the period held by the Liverpool Record Office, attests.

Lewis's Liverpool directory for 1790

Sold "for the small sum of one penny", with an illustrated front cover showing "the new part of Lewis's house of business in Ranelagh Street", this is the earliest surviving example of an attempt to rival Gore's directory to have entered the collections of the Liverpool Record Office. It includes, among its appendices, lists of current and former mayors, MPs, etc.; extracts of acts of Parliament and byelaws containing regulations on the docks; a short history of the city; and a six-page advertisement in the form of an article by "An American newspaper correspondent respecting Lewis's". See also for this year Gore's Liverpool directory, 1790.

Universal British directory

Issued c.1794, this excerpt from a national directory is entitled "Description and directory of Lancaster and Liverpool". The section, which comprises p.[618]-729, is defective at the end, wanting entries from "Woodworth" onwards. Although the capital of Lancashire, the county to which both cities then belonged, the information for Lancaster is dwarfed by that for Liverpool. For comparison, the closest surviving issue of Gore's Liverpool directory appeared in 1796.

Baines' History and directory of Liverpool for 1824

Wanting the original title page, this copy comprises a substantial fragment from p.[149] to p.489, apparently drawn from Edward Baines' History, directory and gazetteer of the County Palatine of Lancaster. Among its contents are: History of Liverpool; Liverpool directory; Classification of the professions and trades in the town and port of Liverpool; and Street directory. Further interesting additions include Directions for restoring drowned persons from the Royal Humane Society. See also Gore's directory of Liverpool with its environs for 1825.

Robson's Alphabetical directory of Liverpool

Issued in 1840, this volume, which is defective at the beginning, and wanting the original title page, this volume begins with Atkinson Street, on p.4 of the Robson's Liverpool street key section, with another street directory in a different format towards the end. The directory proper begins on p. 101, followed on p. 301 by Robson's Classification of trades of Liverpool. Other sections include from p.553, for example, the Chronological annals of Liverpool, and an appendix comprising advertisements. See also Gore's directory of Liverpool and its environs, 1839.

McCorquodale's Annual Liverpool directory

Issued in 1848 and described on the title page as the "first publication", it was perhaps also the last. According to the advertisement at the start of the volume, "The Publishers having had repeatedly brought under their notice the necessity which existed for the publication of an annual directory for Liverpool, resolved to afford the public an opportunity of supplying the want which was so generally felt." Gore's directory was still biennial at this time, and did not appear annually until 1870. The main contents include: an alphabetical list of names; the street directory; the appendix; the advertisements; and the List of professions and trades. Gore's directory of Liverpool and its environs, 1847 and that for 1849 are therefore the closest to this in date.

Slater's Directory

Issued in 1869, according to a hand-written note, this comprises the Liverpool section (p.329-500) only, excerpted from Slater's Directory for Lancashire. Beginning with a general introduction, including details of inland and overseas postal services, nobility and clergy, the main section is entitled Classified directory of Liverpool and its suburbs, including a lengthy section on Taverns & public houses coupled with Retailers of beer, followed by Places of worship and miscellaneous charities, learned societies, etc., completed by a few advertisements. See also Gore's directory of Liverpool and its environs, 1868.

A. Green & Co.'s Directory for Liverpool & Birkenhead

Issued in 1870 with the intention, according to the title page, "To be published annually" its appearance coincided with that of Gore's directory of Liverpool and its environs, 1870. Contents include: Preface; Alphabetical list of streets; The alphabetical directory of the principal private houses of Liverpool; Liverpool alphabetical trades directory; District directory; The principal tradesmen of the city of Chester, Manchester, Warrington, Widnes and Ditton; Calendar for 1870; Local information; and Banks and bankers in London. Advertisements appear in their own separate numerical sequence, interspersed throughout the classified trades section and at the end.
